LIKE A BLIND MAN

DESTROYING AN URBAN SOCIAL MEDIA MYTH

This quote, substituting the word “cat” for the word “hat,” probably because it sounds cooler, appears all over social media sites, usually printed over a picture of a reclining Oscar Wilde, and credited to him. Of course, no one bothers to research whether or not he really ever said or wrote these words. They just share it without questioning its validity, over and over again. Well, guess what? He never uttered or wrote these words. At all. In fact it doesn’t even sound remotely like anything Wilde would have said or ever written. Interestingly enough, when I checked on the origins of this supposed Wilde quote, I found that it most likely originated from a court case heard by Lord Charles Bowen (1835 – 1894), an English Judge, who is recorded as saying, “When I hear of an ‘equity’ in a case like this, I am reminded of a blind man in a dark room – looking for a black hat – which isn’t there.”

Social media sites like Facebook (which I sarcastically always refer to as Farcebook) could be wonderful tools for sharing information and establishing contacts, and sometimes are, but because people don’t take the time to research the truth about most of what they post and share, the sites become little more than garbage scows of misinformation and lies floating on the vast Internet sea, bobbing about without purpose or direction. It makes you wonder who is really blind…
