I first visited England in the summer of 1975 for two months. It was one of the hottest summers in memory and everyone was apologizing because beautiful green England had been burned brown under the intense heat of the sun. The last time I was in England was in 2007 for two weeks in which it rained almost nonstop the whole time. Large areas of central England were underwater in the worst floods in decades. During my other visits between 1979 and 1983 I had better luck with the weather, which was an even mix of sunny and rainy days, with that typical English characteristic of rapid change from one hour or one day to the next. There is some truth in that over-used cliché that if you don’t like the English weather, just wait a bit, and it will change. After all, it is a small island over which the North Atlantic highs and lows usually move in rapid succession before bumping into the Continent. But weather aside, England will always be a place where I feel at home, especially in the beautiful little town of Winchester. Add Salisbury, Bath and Bristol to the list and you’ve defined my favourite stomping grounds…
