In 1985, although I wasn’t a student, I managed to talk my way into going with a group of prehistory students on a university excursion to the Dordogne region of south-western France for a week and a half long tour of the prehistoric sites and the accessible caves. I had last been in the area when I was 11 years old and was living near La Rochelle and I would return again in 2006 for another tour through the caves and the area. The photo was taken in 1985 in the Abri de la Madeleine, a prehistoric shelter under an overhanging cliff situated near Tursac that has a long history of settlement, from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages.
