A LA GOMERA MOMENT – 1991

THE VALLEE GRAN REY ON THE ISLAND OF LA GOMERA

A view looking out over the tops of the banana trees towards the village of Calera, up into the Vallee Gran Rey from the shoreline. The mountain rising behind the village is named La Merica. All of the Canary Islands are volcanic in origin, La Gomera being relatively inactive, unlike Lanzarote, La Palma and Tenerife.  Since this photo taken was over 20 years ago this area today probably has been built up with more hotels and tourist apartments, losing some of its rustic charm. In Calera every Sunday afternoon one of the small restaurants cooked up a huge pot of Paella, a saffron-flavored Spanish dish made with varying combinations of rice, vegetables, meat, chicken, and seafood and everyone was served at long tables in a friendly, noisy communal setting of cats, dogs, children, local residents and travelers.
